Tamara’s RYLA Oceania Journey: Building Confidence, Leadership and New Perspectives

We recently had the pleasure of hearing from Tamara, who shared her experience attending RYLA Oceania (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) — and what a journey it was.

From the very beginning, Tamara’s story captured the room. Even getting to RYLA was an adventure in itself, filled with quick thinking, determination and a few unexpected twists (think Amazing Race energy). That experience set the tone for what would become a truly transformative leadership journey.

A Leadership Experience That Stays With You

Throughout her presentation, Tamara spoke openly about overcoming self-doubt, reconnecting with her core values and learning to see life from new perspectives. These are the kinds of lessons that don’t just stay at a program — they carry through into everyday life.

Her experience at RYLA Oceania pushed her well outside her comfort zone. From delivering a TEDx-style talk on youth empowerment and Living With Autism by Kirk Mercuri, to literally smashing through a wooden plank in a “Karate Kid” moment of confidence-building — every challenge helped shape her growth as a leader.

What is RYLA Oceania?

RYLA Oceania is a life-changing leadership development program run by Rotary, designed for people aged 20–30 who want to grow their confidence, leadership skills and self-awareness.

Participants gain:

  • Stronger leadership and communication skills

  • Greater self-confidence and resilience

  • A deeper understanding of personal values and mindset

  • Lifelong connections with like-minded individuals

  • Practical tools to succeed in both personal and professional life

Why Programs Like RYLA Matter

At the Rotary Club of Kinglake Ranges, we are passionate about supporting youth development and creating opportunities for people in our community to grow.

Programs like RYLA are more than just a camp or course — they are an investment in future leaders. Tamara’s journey is a powerful example of how stepping outside your comfort zone can lead to lasting personal and professional growth.
